Dr Julie Spicer

BSc(Hons), PhD j.spicer@auckland.ac.nz

Dr Julie Spicer is a Medicinal Chemist at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, at the University of Auckland. Her research interests involve the design and synthesis of drugs for cancer and immunosuppression and she teaches in both chemistry and pharmacology courses. Her current research area focuses on the use of small molecules to modulate the immune system. These projects involve selectively targeting cytotoxic effector cells in order to provide a precision medicine for the treatment of cancer with the expectation that this specificity will help to ameliorate toxicities that afflict current cancer therapies. This work involves large multi-disciplinary collaborations with researchers at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University (Melbourne) and Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR, Brisbane).
