Professor Simon Holdaway

Professor Simon Holdaway is the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research Reputation and Performance at the University of Auckland.
Simon studied at the University of Otago for his undergraduate and Masters degrees before obtaining a Fulbright scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he graduated with a PhD in Anthropology in 1991. He was a post-doctoral fellow and then lecturer at La Trobe University, Melbourne, before moving to the University of Auckland in 1999. In 2009, Simon became a Professor of Archaeology and was the Head of School of the School of Social Sciences, in the Faculty of Arts, from 2016-2021.
Simon has undertaken archaeological fieldwork in France, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2018, he was elected as a Corresponding Fellow of the Australian Humanities Academy and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2022.
