MWC Teacher Professional Development Days 2023
In association with BEANZ and The Moko Foundation, we are excited to announce that the Maurice Wilkins Centre (MWC) biology teacher professional development days are back for 2023!

Start Date July 24th 2023
End DateNovember 15th 2023
venueKaitaia, Whangārei, Auckland, Christchurch, New Plymouth, Rotorua
We are delighted with the speakers we have for this year, and they are all keen to meet with you as part of the MWC’s Teacher Professional Development Programme!
These workshops bring together some of New Zealand's leading scientists to present up to date information tailored to NCEA and the national curriculum. Their stories, knowledge, and PowerPoint resources will inspire us as learners and be helpful in our teaching.
The day will be packed with learning, and if we have time during the day, we can discuss how best to incorporate the curriculum changes in a Q and A session.
These workshops are free to attend for all who can come. Morning tea and lunch will be provided too. You will receive further information regarding the venue before your selected workshop.
NCEA Standards
We hope you will find support for many standards such as:
- For Level 3 91604 with Prof Dave Grattan’s talk on homeostasis and Dr Alex Tups’ talk on a new blood glucose drug with a great NZ story.
- For Level 3 91603, 91605 and 91606 with Dr Alana Alexander and Dr Catherine Collins’ topics on behaviour, evolution and speciation of whales and people.
- For Level 3 91602 Dr Anna Brooks’ talk on Long COVID and Prof Dave Grattan’s talk on new weight loss drugs will be fabulous.
- Prof Martin Kennedy will also talk on an area that every teacher can learn from, as he gives us the latest information on the genetics of mental health.
- For Level 2, we think you will find many places where 91154 could be a target for the information you learn; and Genetics 91157 processes too.
We hope you will enjoy the talks and see the authentic spaces to use the knowledge.
