Chinese delegations visit advances engagement with NZ medical science

19 December 2016

Delegations from China National Center for Biotechnology Development (CNCBD) and Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) visited the Maurice Wilkins Centre 30 November to 4 December to discuss opportunities for engagement with New Zealand science.

The CNCBD is responsible for deciding China’s investment in drug discovery programmes. SIMM has received close to a quarter of China’s drug discovery investment to build a nation-wide drug discovery platform.

The delegations met with leaders from the Maurice Wilkins Centre to discuss engagement with non-communicable disease and infectious disease research in New Zealand, opportunities for drug discovery, and general access to the New Zealand translational research community.

The CNCBD delegation were impressed by the level of aggregated excellence of the Maurice Wilkins Centre’s research network and the nation-wide access provided by the Centre. The visits build upon existing relationships between the two countries that aim to foster collaborative research and drug discovery projects.
